Hi {{ subscriber.first_name }},
Happy New Year!
Time for goal setting. This is what I discussed in today’s new episode of The World Class Leaders Show.
Here’s the problem. Many people struggle to set the right goals.
Either they set unrealistic goals to achieve in a reasonable short time or they just set too simple goals to play safe.
In my view, it’s fundamental to set goals that can make a real impact on our lives and have the right plan and system to follow up consistently to achieve them.
Looking at how our brain works, I realized that you need to set the three types of goals:
1. Transformational Goals
Transformational goals are big ones. The biggest ones.
These are goals that are set to transform your life. They are not achievable in 12 months (they could but hardly will happen if they are big enough).
It’s wonderful to have these goals as long as you have full clarity on your 5-10 years vision.
Once you know what is your vision and where you are heading, then it becomes much easier to understand what transformational goals you need to achieve.
For this reason, I believe that 2-3 years is the right timeframe for this type of goal.
2. Stretch Goals
Stretch goals are your focus for this year.
I call them stretch goals because they need to stretch yourself outside of your comfort zone. They have to be big enough to make you feel uncomfortable. This is how you grow and move in the right direction.
Here’s the key. Make sure that your stretch goals are 100% aligned with the transformational goals. They are designed to help you get there so if you’re planning big goals that are unrelated to the transformational goals, stop chasing them and focus only on what matters.
Finally, it’s important that you define the challenge level of your stretch goals.
Here’s when neuroscience comes in handy. If your challenge level is similar to your current skill level, achieving your goals will be easy so most likely you set small goals for yourself.
On the other hand, if the challenge level is too big, you’ll quickly realize you won’t be able to make it and lose motivation and energy.
The ideal sweet spot is selecting a goal that has 20-30% higher challenge level than your existing skill level.
3. Progress Goals
Your progress goals are essentially your daily or weekly goals.
I call them progress goals because they must help you to achieve your stretch goals. Progress goals are not simple checklists though.
These are goals that are necessary to accomplish to achieve later the stretch goals. They are part of the journey.
What I find often is that people have 90% of daily tasks that are unrelated to their big goals. We all have necessary tasks to complete to run our business or division, but they key is to leave a space in your day for the progress goals only.
I suggest working on them in the morning when you’re fresh, have more energy and more motivation. If you can’t, that’s ok but make sure you reserve a time block only for them.
How does it sound? Do you use a different strategy that works for you?
