Hi {{ subscriber.first_name }}, Ever wonder why your team isn’t hitting the performance levels you know they’re capable of? It might not be about them—it could be about you. Here are 3 leadership mistakes that could be killing your team’s performance (+ how to fix them right away): 1: Micromanaging—Trying to Control Everything Micromanaging is usually driven by fear—fear that things won’t get done right, that mistakes will happen, or that the leader won’t stay in control. When you micromanage, you send a clear message to your team: I don’t trust you. Even if you don’t say it outright, that’s what your actions communicate. Your team will sense it. When people feel like they aren’t trusted, they stop being proactive, they stop coming up with new ideas, and they stop taking initiative. They become passive, just waiting for instructions. Worst of all, you’ll exhaust yourself by doing everyone’s job instead of focusing on what matters most as a leader. The solution here is to learn how to delegate with trust. Delegating doesn’t just mean handing off tasks—it means giving your team the responsibility and freedom to take ownership of their work. Start by clearly defining the outcomes you want, but then step back and let your team figure out how to get there. Let them make decisions, and more importantly, let them make mistakes and learn from them. Over time, your team will grow more confident, more capable, and more self-reliant—allowing you to focus on the bigger picture. 2: Focusing on Tasks, Not People It’s easy to get caught up in deadlines, KPIs, and the endless list of things that need to get done. But here’s the thing: your team isn’t a machine. When leaders only focus on tasks and results, they create a transactional relationship with their team. Employees start to feel like cogs in a wheel, only valued for what they can produce. And when people don’t feel valued, they won’t go the extra mile—they’ll do just enough to get by. Over time, you’ll notice that performance levels drop, and even your high performers will start losing their edge. Shift your focus from just tasks to people first. Building a high-performing team starts with investing in your people. Take time to understand their strengths, motivations, and challenges. Give them opportunities to grow, whether it’s through coaching, mentorship, or new responsibilities. Recognize their contributions and show genuine appreciation for their efforts, not just their results. High performance follows naturally when you create a culture where people are seen and appreciated for who they are, not just what they do. 3: Lack of Clear Direction A lot of times, leaders assume their team knows what to do because they’ve mentioned goals in passing or held a few meetings. But the reality is - without clear and consistent direction - even the best teams will struggle. When your team doesn’t have a clear sense of direction, they end up spinning their wheels. They might be working hard, but without a clear understanding of what success looks like, their efforts can be scattered and unfocused. People start second-guessing their decisions or pulling in different directions, which creates bottlenecks and slows progress to a crawl. The fix here is twofold: clarity and communication. First, be crystal clear about what you expect. What does success look like for this project, this week, or this quarter? Break down big goals into specific, actionable steps. Make sure everyone knows their role in achieving the overall objective. Second, communicate frequently. Don’t assume that one meeting or one email is enough to keep everyone on track. Touch base regularly to ensure everyone understands the priorities and is aligned with the vision. When people have a clear sense of direction, they can focus their energy on what truly matters—and that’s when you’ll see performance take off. Does it make sense?
