Hi {{ subscriber.first_name }},

In the latest episode of The World Class Leader Show, I had the pleasure of speaking with Deborah Ancona, the Distinguished Professor of Management at MIT Sloan School of Management and founder of the MIT Leadership Center. Deborah’s research has revolutionized how we think about team dynamics and leadership. In our conversation, she shared valuable insights on applying her academic work to real-world organizational challenges.

Understanding 'Family Ghosts' in Leadership
One fascinating concept Deborah discussed was 'family ghosts'—the behaviors, values, and attitudes ingrained in us during childhood that often surface in the workplace. These 'ghosts' can be both beneficial and detrimental, influencing how leaders operate.

For instance, someone who learned to be a perfectionist as a child might excel in their career but also risk burnout. Deborah emphasized the importance of recognizing these patterns and consciously addressing them to avoid negative impacts on leadership and team dynamics.

The Power of X-Teams
We also delved into the X-Teams concept, a developed framework for high-performing teams. Unlike traditional teams that focus inwardly, X-Teams are externally oriented, actively engaging with the outside world to drive innovation.

Deborah stressed that in today’s fast-paced environment, teams must gather external insights before setting goals or making decisions. This approach fuels creativity and ensures that teams remain agile and aligned with broader organizational strategies.

Leadership in a Changing World
Deborah highlighted the importance of leadership that adapts to change, particularly in times of crisis. She shared how some organizations, especially during the pandemic, found success by listening to innovative teams who had been previously overlooked. This ability to shift leadership focus and embrace new ideas is vital for organizations looking to thrive in turbulent times.
