Hi {{ subscriber.first_name }}, In today's episode of The World Class Leader Show, I invite Stefano Aversa, Global Vice Chairman and Chairman EMEA at AlixPartners, a firm renowned for its crisis management and performance improvement expertise. With over 30 years of experience, Stefano shared his insights on how organizations can navigate through uncertainty and thrive despite disruptions. Understanding AlixPartners AlixPartners, founded in 1981, is known for handling critical, urgent matters related to crisis management, technological changes, and performance improvement. Stefano explained that while 25% of their work focuses on heavy-duty restructuring, a significant portion, about 50-60%, deals with performance improvement. This involves helping companies transition from good to great by enhancing financial and operational performance. The remaining part of their work involves risk management, including big litigations, fraud investigations, and economic consulting. Dealing with Uncertainty and Ambiguity Stefano highlighted that today's world is dominated more by disruptions than traditional economic cycles. Unlike in the past, when strategic planning spanned several years, modern organizations must be agile, ready to pivot quickly in response to sudden changes. He pointed out that disruptions such as pandemics, geopolitical events, and cyber-attacks are difficult to predict but tend to have abrupt, significant impacts. Stefano emphasized the importance of having multiple contingency plans and maintaining agility to manage these challenges. He stressed the need for organizations to prepare for disruptions by fostering leadership that can quickly adapt and execute new strategies. Leadership in Crisis One of the most intriguing aspects of the interview was Stefano's approach to leadership during a crisis. He explained that in times of crisis, change becomes easier as the urgency is higher. Leaders must remain calm, rational, and decisive, often making decisions based on the 80/20 rule or even the 70/30 rule, given the limited time to address issues comprehensively. Stefano shared a unique strategy he employs: sometimes creating a small crisis to bring underlying issues to the surface. By doing this, he can address conflicts and inefficiencies that would otherwise remain hidden and detrimental to the organization's energy and focus. The Role of CEOs Today Discussing the current landscape for CEOs, Stefano noted that many CEOs feel less secure in their roles today due to rapid technological changes, geopolitical shifts, and economic uncertainties. He observed that modern CEOs tend to be more consensus-oriented, caring, and authentic, focusing on building a supportive environment rather than just directing tasks. Stefano's Philanthropic Endeavors Beyond his corporate responsibilities, Stefano is deeply involved in the Andrea Bocelli Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering people and communities. The foundation's initiatives include building schools in underserved areas, providing access to clean water, and supporting children's education in hospitals. Stefano's involvement in the foundation exemplifies his commitment to making a positive impact beyond the business world. This is a short summary of our conversation.
