Carol Nakhle was born in Lebanon during the Civil War, an experience that deeply shaped her approach to life and work. Growing up amidst conflict, she learned to live with risk and uncertainty. These early lessons became valuable as she ventured into her career, dealing with the volatility and complexity of the business world. She pursued higher education in the UK, earning a doctorate from the University of Surrey. Carol's career began with prestigious roles at major organizations like the World Bank and the UN. However, her entrepreneurial spirit led her to found Crystol Energy, an advisory, research, and training firm specializing in energy economics, policy, market developments, and geopolitics. Starting Crystol Energy was a leap of faith. Carol began the company from scratch, with no initial capital. Her vision was to create a firm that could work with a wide range of stakeholders, providing tailored solutions rather than one-size-fits-all advice. She emphasized the importance of coupling advisory services with training to ensure that clients could effectively implement recommendations. One significant challenge Carol highlighted is the complexity of industry transitions. While political rhetoric often sets ambitious targets, the on-ground realities are much more nuanced. The needs of poorer nations, which rely heavily on established resources, must be considered in any global transition. Carol believes that changes will be gradual and multifaceted, emphasizing the need for realistic goals and a balanced approach. As a woman in a predominantly male industry, Carol faced numerous challenges. She recounted instances where she was often underestimated or misjudged based on her gender. Instead of being deterred, she used these experiences to fuel her determination. Carol founded the "Access to Energy" group to provide an equal platform for men and women to discuss industry issues, aiming to move beyond gender biases.
