I am currently working with and for a CEO and his Executive Team of a large organization and one thing that we're working on is how we can get the team to own the results. Both individually and collectively.

Before I got involved, the focus of the previous CEO was only to make people accountable. Which is different.

Here's the thing...

Making people accountable has a marginal impact on results unless people build a strong sense of ownership.

Here’s why ownership is more impactful:

When people build ownership, they don’t need external:

  • inputs
  • control
  • motivation
  • accountability

They’ll do what it takes to get results.

Many leaders and teams don’t get even close to ownership. The good ones build good mutual accountability but they don’t own collectively the results.

Meaning: they never achieve extraordinary results.

In my view, accountability is a tactical approach to getting results while ownership is a mindset for great performance.

How to instill a sense of ownership:

  • give people a strong purpose
  • help them to believe in extraordinary results
  • encourage to use a committed language

As a leader, my question for you is:

Is your team owning the whole? Or does everyone play in his own field?
