Hi {{ subscriber.first_name }},

I realized I was winning at work and losing at life.

That’s what a CEO admitted to me during a coaching session.

He went on to share how he’d missed countless milestones—his kids’ birthdays, anniversaries, and family vacations.

He thought his relentless dedication to the company was building his legacy.

But then, one day, his young son asked him:

“Dad, we don’t see you much. Do you even like being at home?”

That question hit him harder than any business setback ever could.

And here’s the hard truth:

This isn’t just his story. It’s the reality for so many leaders.

The Trap We Fall Into as Leaders

Why does this happen?

  • Long hours and unrelenting pressure to perform.
  • The belief that sacrifice—your time, your relationships, your health—is the unavoidable price of success.
  • A mindset that says, “I’ll make it up later,” as though life will wait for you to clear your calendar.

But here’s the wake-up call: this isn’t sustainable.

If you keep sacrificing your life for your work, you’ll wake up one day and realize you’ve lost the people and the moments that matter most.

How to Lead Without Losing Your Life

So, how do we lead differently? Let me share five mindset shifts that can transform how you balance work and life.

1. Audit Your Time for Energy, Not Just Tasks

We all know the drill—prioritize tasks, manage deadlines, delegate.

But here’s the twist: don’t just audit your time; audit your energy.

  • Start tracking how your day's activities fuel or drain you.
  • Are you spending hours on tasks that leave you mentally exhausted? Reallocate time toward things that energize and inspire you at work and home.

This small shift can do wonders for your productivity and your emotional well-being.

2. Create Hard Transitions Between Work and Home

How many of us walk through the door at home, but our minds are still at the office?

  • Build a ritual to help you transition. It could be a walk, meditation, or simply sitting in your car for five minutes to decompress.
  • When you step into your home, commit to being fully present. That means putting down the phone, engaging with your partner or kids, and giving them your full attention.

When you’re home, be home.

3. Redefine Success for Yourself and Your Team

Leadership isn’t about doing everything yourself. In fact, it’s the opposite.

  • Step back, trust your team, and give them room to grow.
  • Ask yourself: what kind of leader do I want to be remembered as? One who micromanaged or one who inspired growth and autonomy?

Success isn’t just about personal achievement—it’s about the legacy you leave behind in the people you lead.

4. Align Your Family Into Your Vision

What if you approached your family like you do your stakeholders at work?

  • Share your vision for the future with your loved ones. Let them know your goals—and take the time to learn theirs.
  • Include them in your world, and you’ll find they’re not just cheering you on; they’re part of your success.

When your family feels valued and involved, the gap between work and home narrows.

5. Think 20 Years Ahead—Then Work Backwards

Here’s a question to sit with: when you look back 20 years from now, what will you regret more—missing a big meeting or missing a family moment?

  • Picture your future self. Let that vision guide your priorities today.
  • The moments you choose now are the ones you’ll carry with you. Don’t trade them away for fleeting deadlines.

My final thoughts:

Success isn’t just about titles, paychecks, or business growth.

True success is building a life you’re proud of—one where your leadership shines both at work and home.

What resonated most with you today? What changes will you make to ensure you’re winning at work and thriving in life?

Until next time, remember:

Leadership starts with the life you choose to lead.
