Hi {{ subscriber.first_name }},

What if I told you that most CEOs are running their companies from the wrong place?

Not geographically—but mentally.

Research shows CEOs spend 72% of their time in meetings and only 3% with customers.

That’s not leadership—it’s insulation.

In today's article, I’ll share why the future of leadership is frontline-first, and what great CEOs are doing to get out of the boardroom and back into the business.

The CEO Bubble—And Why It’s Dangerous

Let’s start with the data:

  • 72% of a CEO’s time is spent in meetings.
  • 6% with frontline employees.
  • Just 3% with customers.

This is staggering—and sadly, it checks out.

I’ve seen it across industries. CEOs are surrounded by leadership teams who act as filters. They share selective insights, filtered data, or what they think the CEO wants to hear.

And it’s not malicious—it’s how the system is built.

But the result? CEOs lead through interpretation—not observation. They make decisions based on second-hand narratives.

That’s how assumptions get baked into strategy—and how great companies slowly lose touch with reality.

The Rise of the Frontline CEO

Now let’s flip the model.

Imagine a CEO who spends valuable time with customers and employees.

Who works shoulder-to-shoulder with frontline staff—not just their executive team.

That’s not fantasy. It’s happening.

Some of the best CEOs out there (from Airbnb, Starbucks to Uber) lead from the front. They spent months "under cover" to understand what is not working in the business.

What did they all discover?

Flaws. Friction. Insights they’d never have seen from behind a desk. And more importantly—a connection to the business they’re leading.

That’s what I call the Frontline CEO.

What Changes When You Show Up

Spending time with the frontline isn’t just good PR. It’s not just a culture boost.

It’s a strategic advantage.

Because when you show up:

  • You see the truth, unfiltered.
  • You understand how your decisions land in the real world.
  • You find innovation in places your leadership team may overlook.

And here’s the kicker—when your people see you listening, learning, and implementing…

Engagement skyrockets.

Because suddenly, their voice matters.

This Isn’t Just About the CEO

This mindset shift applies to everyone in leadership: COOs, CMOs, CHROs, Directors.

Great leadership isn’t about proximity to the boardroom. It’s about proximity to reality.

You don’t need to abandon meetings. But you do need to ask: Am I spending time where the business actually happens?

Because if you’re not connected to your customers, your employees, your frontline—you’re leading in the dark.

What Kind of Leader Do You Want to Be?

So here’s my challenge: Flip your calendar. Flip your mindset.

Be the kind of CEO who doesn’t just lead from the top—but from the front. And when you do, your team will follow.

Not because they have to. Because they believe you’re in it with them.
